Questions about divorce certificates
Does this service include getting divorced?
No. This service obtains a document confirming a divorce that has already been registered. If your marriage has not yet ended, see our separate remote divorce service for the process and terms.
Who can request the certificate?
Either former spouse whose divorce was registered in Georgia may contact us, including foreign citizens. We obtain the document as the applicant’s representative under a notarised power of attorney.
Why might I need a replacement?
You may need it for a new marriage, to document a surname change, for residence or citizenship applications, or if the previous certificate was lost. Requirements depend on where you intend to submit it.
Can I obtain it while living abroad?
Yes. Our service uses a representative so you do not need to travel to Georgia. We provide the power of attorney wording and instructions; certification and delivery requirements are agreed for the country where it is issued.
What if the certificate is lost or I do not know the divorce date?
Share the names, place and approximate year you know. If you have a court judgment or a document copy, provide it for the initial check. If details are insufficient, we agree any further search separately.
I only have a court judgment. Can I request a certificate?
Send the judgment details for review. We need to establish whether the divorce has been registered with the civil status registration authority. If an additional registration step is needed, we agree its procedure and scope separately.
Do I need an apostille to use the certificate abroad?
That depends on the country and the recipient’s requirements. We clarify whether an apostille, translation, certification of the translation or consular legalisation is needed. These services are agreed separately from certificate retrieval.
Can retrieval be expedited?
