Divorce in Georgia without attending in person: can you arrange it without travelling?

PRO Documents · Checked against official sources:

Yes. In cases provided for by law, a representative may submit an application for divorce registration in Georgia. This makes it possible to consider a route without travelling, but the legal basis, the spouses’ consent and the documents need checking first. Living abroad does not by itself determine the procedure.

Prepared on 26 October 2026 using official sources. This is general information. Confirm eligibility and the requirements for your particular documents before arranging them.

First check whether registration in Georgia is available

Article 55 of the Law on Civil Status Acts provides for divorce registration where a spouse is a Georgian citizen or holds a Georgian residence permit, or where an authorised Georgian body registered the marriage. For two foreign nationals, the place of marriage registration therefore matters.

Prepare information about citizenship, residence permits and where the marriage took place. If it was registered outside Georgia, confirm that the Georgian procedure applies before proceeding.

What to prepare for an application through a representative

For a joint application, SDA lists the spouses’ application, their identity documents and the marriage certificate. A representative also needs a duly certified power of attorney and their own identity document.

Agree the wording before visiting a notary: which actions the representative may take and whether they may submit applications and collect the certificate. Separately check how the spouses’ signatures on the application must be certified, which originals are needed and the translation requirements. Avoid ordering documents solely from a generic online template.

How to organise the process from abroad

Start with a preliminary document review. Explain where both spouses are, whether both agree to divorce, whether there are children, disputes or a court judgment, and where the final certificate will be used.

Then agree how documents will be certified in your country of residence, whether an apostille or legalisation is needed, the Georgian translation requirements and how originals will be delivered. Confirm these details for the issuing country and receiving authority before paying for notarial work and shipping.

Plan separate stages: assessment, agreement on documents, preparation and delivery, filing, and collection of the result. Ask your representative to confirm completion of each stage.

Planning the time and cost

The registration period is not the total time needed to arrange everything from abroad. Allow for preparing the power of attorney, translation, shipping and possible corrections.

Request an itemised estimate covering the state fee, notary, translation, document certification, delivery and representation. Ask what additional costs may arise if further documents are required.

What to check when the certificate is issued

A Georgian document intended for use abroad may need an apostille or legalisation. SDA explains these certification methods; confirm the appropriate route for the destination country and applicable agreements.

Before ordering a translation, ask the receiving authority which document it needs, how the translation must be certified and whether separate recognition of the divorce is required. An apostille alone may not settle every question about marital status.

If you plan to arrange documents through PRO Documents, begin by describing your situation and the country where the document will be used. Agree the procedure and document list before issuing a power of attorney.
