How quickly can you divorce in Georgia? Realistic stages and timelines

PRO Documents · Checked against official sources:

The shortest official stage is registration on a joint application: SDA states five working days after filing. If the spouses are abroad, preparation, certification and delivery of the powers of attorney must be added. Where there is a dispute or no consent, court proceedings apply and a reliable completion date cannot be promised in advance.

Prepared on 26 October 2026 using official sources. Statutory time limits do not guarantee a result date in a particular case; timing depends on the legal route, documents, service on the parties, workload and possible appeals.

Mutual consent: five working days after filing

For registration on the spouses’ joint application, SDA states a period of five working days after filing. The law provides this interval so that either spouse may withdraw from the divorce before registration.

This is the government processing stage after a complete package has been accepted, not the whole period from the first enquiry. Weekends and official non-working days are excluded.

The joint route requires the spouses’ application, their identity documents and the marriage certificate. A representative additionally needs a duly certified power of attorney and their identity document.

Remote filing: what must be added to the five days

Where spouses live abroad, the legal basis and documents are reviewed first, followed by agreement on the power of attorney and application. Documents are then certified, apostilled or legalised where required, translated and delivered to Georgia.

In practice, preparation and international delivery often take longer than registration. Their duration depends on the country, the notary, the certification route and the delivery service.

Count the five working days only after confirmation that the representative has filed a package accepted by the authority. Ask for proof of filing and agree separately on collection and shipment of the completed certificate.

Court proceedings: there is no single fast deadline

Court proceedings may be necessary without mutual consent or where a dispute must be resolved. The Civil Procedure Code sets a general benchmark of hearing a civil case within two months after receipt of the application and permits an extension for a particularly complex case. This is a procedural benchmark, not a promised divorce date.

Admission of the claim, service on the defendant, hearings, evidence, related claims and appeals all affect timing. Serving a spouse abroad may add substantial time.

The court may also adjourn proceedings and allow up to six months for reconciliation. A court divorce therefore cannot responsibly be advertised with one timeline for every case.

After court: the judgment must reach the civil register

The end of a hearing does not complete every documentary stage. The judgment must become legally effective under the applicable rules and any appeal process.

The Law on Civil Status Acts provides that the court sends an effective divorce judgment to the registration authority within five working days. The divorce is then registered on the basis of that judgment.

The judgment must contain the required details about the spouses and marriage registration. Missing data can prevent registration, so accuracy should be checked in the court documents.

Building a realistic schedule

Break the timeline into stages: initial review, document preparation, delivery to Georgia, administrative registration or litigation, certificate collection, apostille or legalisation, and return delivery.

Before work begins, establish whether both spouses agree, where the marriage was registered, where each spouse is, whether there is a dispute concerning children, maintenance or property, and where the result will be used.

For an agreed administrative divorce, treat five working days as the official stage after filing. For litigation, request a range and an explanation of risks instead of a guaranteed date.
